Professor Gregory McCarthy

Lab News

Congratulations to our recent alumna Sarah Shultz who has taken a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University.  As a co-director of the Neuroimaging Core at the Marcus Autism Center, she will be focusing on prospective longitudinal studies of brain development in infants at high-risk and low-risk for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Her research seeks to understand the causes and biological mechanisms of ASD by studying brain development and its relationship to the developmental unfolding of social behavior.
A new paper from our lab was accepted for publication in the journal Social, Cognitive, and Affective Neuroscience. Using Dynamic Causal Modeling, this paper proposes a neural model for animacy detection based on the causal flow of information between the right fusiform gyrus (FG) and right posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS). The title and abstract can be found below.
A new paper from Andrew Engell and Gregory McCarthy was accepted for publication in the journal Human Brain Mapping. This paper concerns a study of the effects of face repetition upon electrical brain activity in the alpha and gamma bands recorded from electrodes placed directly upon the fusiform gyrus in patients with epilepsy. The title and abstract can be found below.
Su Mei presented her recent work at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience 2013 (Nov 9-13, San Diego, CA). You can find her poster and abstract below.   Lee, S. M. & McCarthy, G. (2013) Observing biological motion does not necessarily increase pSTS activity.
Our friend and post-doc extraordinaire Andrew Engell has taken a position at Kenyon College as Assistant Professor of Psychology. Congratulations to Andrew as he gets his brand new lab up and running, while simultaneously dazzling the students with his erudition. Andrew can be reached at engella at kenyon dot edu.
HNL alumna Andrea Gold completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Yale and her clinical internship in 2013. Andrea has taken a post-doctoral position with Dr. Danny Pine at the Section for Section on Development and Affective Neuroscience at the National Institute of Mental Health. Andrea will be working on neuroimaging studies of fear conditioning and extinction recall in pediatric and adult anxiety disorders to examine brain circuitry mediating threat-safety learning across development. Way to go Andrea!
HNL alumna Sarah Shultz completed her Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and is now working at the Marcus Autism Center at Emory University. Sarah will be investigating the neural correlates of social engagement in children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) using naturalistic viewing paradigms. Sarah will also be working on longitudinal studies of typically-developing infants and infants at high-risk for ASD using both behavioral and neuroimaging techniques.
